A photo opportunity not to be missed when two of our local businessmen, Philip Hammon (Scenic World) and Tom Colless (Colless Foods) put on their convict suits and posed with the newly unveiled bust of William Charles Wentworth.
Taking pride of place in the beautiful village of Wentworth Falls, the bust was commissioned by Businesses Supporting the Bicentenary along with similar busts of Gregory Blaxland and William Lawson, at Blaxland and Lawson respectively.
The three busts were created by one of Australia’s best known sculptors and local resident, Terrance Plowright. Our two “convicts” are members of local Rotary clubs and were benefactors.
William Charles Wentworth (1790-1872) was a member of the expedition that crossed the Blue Mountains in 1813. He was a poet, explorer, journalist and politician, and one of the leading figures of early colonial New South Wales. He was the first native-born Australian to achieve a reputation overseas, and a leading advocate for self-government for the Australian colonies. We are proud to have him in the village, just near the railway station.
